Raymond Ng Trial: Witness Says His VendShare Sign-Up Was for Co-Ownership and Income

SINGAPORE: 7 July 2026 – The afternoon opened with Mr. Raymond Ng resuming his cross-examination of Mr. Chua (the Witness) at 1520 Hrs.
Questions About the Alleged Cheating and Timing
The Witness and Mr. Ng went back and forth for a while about a “VendShare Agreement” and a PayNow transaction and its date. Ng asked, “Putting aside that the exact date of the PayNow transaction is unknown, but to the best of your memory is before the Stripe payment, when did the alleged cheating happen?”
After some help by the Judge to paraphrase and explain the question, the witness started with, “The first instance of feeling cheated…” to which the Judge politely interrupted and said, “not the feeling” to which Ng visibly sighed, “but rather when did the alleged deception happen?” (I am paraphrasing the second quotation by the Judge due to not being able to type the entire sentence fast enough in court, but the meaning is the same to best of my knowledge).
The witness answered and Ng interrupted about the quality/inaccuracy of the answer. The Judge explained to the witness further using examples of recent scam cases in the news, separating the date that a person would get a phone call, from the date the money was transferred (a week later for example), from the date that the person would realise they had been cheated (two weeks later for example). 3 dates or stages, in total.
The witness answered that the cheating happened in his case, when the first PayNow payment happened.
Co-Ownership of the Vending Machine
After some further questions, Mr. Ng asked if the form that Mr. Chua signed, contained any section or mention, of the “co-ownership of a vending machine”. The witness said that it wasn’t there, but that at a presentation given before the form was presented for signing, it was stated that there would be co-ownership of vending machines.
Mr. Ng carried on with more questions and then asked the witness that from the multiple presentations he had attended... “payment that would be paid out to you, would be based on coffee sales?” At one point, Ng even asked, “Mr. Chua, you are a well educated person. Do you think that pure ownership of a machine, would give you income?”
The witness responded with “Could you clarify what you mean by pure ownership?” Ng explained, “If you buy a coffee machine and put it in your home, would you generate any revenue?” (I am paraphrasing the words with quotation marks here due to not being able to type the entire sentence fast enough in court, but the meaning is the same to best of my knowledge).
The Witness said no, in a few words. Ng asked, “Do you remember me asking that question before?” The Witness responded with “I don’t know.”
Ng proceeded, “In the future Zoom evens that you attended, did I say that “If you put the machine at home, would ever get income?” Did you hear me say that before?” The Witness responded with “I don’t know” again. Ng pressed on with “Ok but in your (present) state of mind, do you agree that if you put a machine at home, you would have no income?”
The Witness said, “Yes.” Ng then asked, “Do you agree that a pure ownership agreement wouldn’t generate income?” The Witness said, “Yes.” After further back and forth between Ng, the prosecution, the Witness and the Judge, Ng asked, “Which part of this form says that there is or there would be co-ownership of the coffee vending machine?”
The Witness said, “Just in serial number 1. and 2. of the sign up form where it says that “ownership of the vending franchise.” Ng retorted with, “Mr. Chua you aren’t answering the question.” The Judge shared with Ng that he was welcome to ask a follow-up question if he pleased.
Ng asked about the difference between the phrases “vending franchise” and “vending machine”, and the Witness stated that in his view, they were the same thing and in the view of many other people as well.
Ng asked him to stick to speaking for himself, and the Judge agreed with Ng and reminded the Witness to do so. The witness corrected himself and stated that according to the presentation, this is what he understood it to be, and used the word “reasonable” when describing his assumption/understanding/thought process.
Discussion About Ownership & Income
Ng later asked, “How is the ownership of the machine, related to the income potential of the machine? How are they related? Or are they related at all?” The witness explained, Ng responded and the Judge clarified for both of them as the discussion did get a bit charged at a few points, but nothing uncivil ensued.
The Judge asked the witness, “Based on your understanding, how would the coffee machine generate income?” The witness explained that based on his understanding, the machine would sell itself in that its products would be visibly attractive to passers-by and also highlighted that in his view, the co-ownership of the franchise and hence machines, would be what would make it possible for the machines to even be there.
Ng continued to cross-examine and ask, “So according to you, owning a vending machine, magically makes you have income…?” The witness asked what Ng meant by “magically”, and the Judge stepped in to explain to Ng that he had to be fair to the witness and his testimony so far.
While Ng was agreeing with the Judge, the Prosecution stepped in abruptly to state that in Ng’s cross examination, “he won’t be allowed” to ask questions that are inconsistent with his own position, but the Judge mentioned that he was inclined to allow Ng to cross-examine in his way, as long as he was asking questions based on the evidence submitted by the Witness.
Clarifying "Point A" and "Point B"
A slightly heated back and forth ensued later between the Judge and Ng, over a misunderstanding about what Ng was asking with a question about a “Point A” and a “Point B” to the Witness. The Judge wanted to clarify which points in time Ng was referring to but Ng was enthusiastically insisting that these “points” had nothing to do with time per se, but rather, in this writer’s understanding, with process. Once he was allowed to get that explanation out by the Judge, the questions and answers resumed smoothly again.
Franchise Agreement & Court Break
Ng and the Witness went back and forth for a bit, including Ng questioning what the Witness understood by the term “Franchise Agreement” and the Witness mentioning some alleged threats by Ng. Eventually the Judge gave a break to let the witness look through document P7I.
The Judge gave a break from 16:27 to 16:45.
Discussion About The Alleged Threat
Upon returning, The witness said, “It is not in P71”. Ng asked, “Is there any threat you have been issued in a written format, anywhere at all?” The Witness answered, “I believe the threat was issued in the Zoom meeting I had with you in November.” He was referring to a Zoom call on 28th November 2020.
The Judge asked the Witness to try to produce the recording of the Zoom meeting in a CD-ROM format by the next day. Ng stated to the Witness that the Zoom meeting with the alleged threat happened on “28th November 2020, it was 5 hours before you made a police report.”
Why Did The Witness Sign Up?
Then Ng proceeded further. He asked the witness if income was the main reason he signed up. The witness disagreed with Ng, upon clarification by the Judge where the Judge highlighted to Ng that it was the witness’s evidence already that he signed up because of the co-ownership of the vending machine(s), as well as income and not income alone.
Ng questioned the Witness on that further and the Witness asked a rhetorical sounding question to which Ng responded candidly, “So now I am being cross-examined.”
There was some muffled laughter from the audience.
Ownership Versus Income Potential
The discussion then moved to a document called P4I. Ng asked questions about nature of the ownership, or what the Witness understood by “ownership” and as they were debating the finer details of that, the Judge brought Ng’s attention back to the fact that the charge was about cheating people by deceiving them into believing that they would be acquiring ownership and not about the finer details of ownership.
Later, Ng said to the Witness, “I put it to you that that you did not sign up to this VendShare programme because of the co-ownership of the machine. It was because of the income potential.”
The Witness said it was a “convoluted” question and asked for re-phrasing. The Judge clarified with the Witness that it was a straightforward question and asked him for an agree or disagree answer. He disagreed.
Then the Judge asked him to elaborate on whatever he was trying to earlier and wanted to. The Witness went on to explain that he signed up for partial co-ownership. Ng said to the Witness that even if had promised co-ownership, which he hadn’t, he had fulfilled it due to two sections in the contract, point 29.7 and point 29.10.
End of the Afternoon Session
The Witness explained about an alleged “gap” between what was first mentioned to him during a presentation (which induced (his word) him to participate in this agreement in the first place), and the contract that was presented eventually. The Judge asked him to point out the main differences in the franchisee agreement which was presented to him, compared to the points explained in the presentation.
The Witness said at 17:29 Hrs that he wouldn’t be able to do it immediately, now, but that he did remember, that when he was first presented with this contract, there were points which he disagreed with.
The Judge asked him to come earlier the next day at perhaps 915, so that he could make some notes about the differences between the agreement and the presentation in person and also reminded him to get the CD-ROM prepared (as mentioned earlier in this article).
The trial continues on 8th July 2026, in open court at 930am.
