Once, as you do when you are a child and you have to listen to your parents... I "had to" get ready for an event in the evening held by the Parsi Association of Singapore. My Dad was the main priest and I'm not sure if his sense of duty came from actual gusto or a traumatic upbringing (more on his journey as a kid who was shipped off to a priest-in-training's boarding school for kids another time), but he made sure it spread through me like a lightning road.

"We have to go for this."

I remember asking my Mom several times in my childhood about silly unrelated events which just stole my joy (as a kid I mean... as an adult, sure, sometimes I do like certain events but mostly I tend to be an introvert), about whether we had to go, and the answer was always the same. "We have to go. If Daddy said we have to go means we have to go there is no way we cannot go." After a few tries I gave up and resigned to the fact that my life was meant to be controlled by these two people. The kids these days though (it's April 2026) at the time of writing this, I'm not sure if we're raising them well and giving them lots of choices and that's what it is, or if the whole spiritual thing of "they are here to change your planet", is what it is (side note: I believe some of us are here to change it too - to transmute the pain of our parents' generations into better energy), but they really do put their foot down. As it should be. We're also loving enough to listen. Takes two to tango.

Anyway, I arrive at this event, gloomy, having a bad hair day, and not wearing what I liked (my Dad controlled what I wore and how I looked for years, maybe over a decade till I snapped at 15 and lived life my own way), and I ask my inner voice, and I think my grandma who was on the dinner table (the tables were circular and laid out around a ballroom), "What am I even at this stupid event for?" Suddenly I freeze, the area turns cold-ish and I remember just being frozen in time and a voice goes, "You're going to win the lucky draw, that's why you're here." I remember being almost forced/guided to turn my head to this jar where they're collecting the stubs of the event tickets from people. I say, "Ok... sure," sheepishly, but I remember also suddenly being on fire on the inside from excitement, although I had already decided/known that I was going to be the winner.

Guess what happened at the end of the evening as I got steadily more bored till I was literally bitter with boredom? I won the lucky draw. As they announced my ticket number, I was half unsurprised because I knew inside, "Yeah, yeah, this was going to happen."

I've many more such Harry Potter moments throughout my life too. Lots. More stories in other articles.
